During quarantine, Steve suggested everyone get together on Zoom and play Guitarmageddon, the songwriting game where you make up a song based on a title someone else suggests.
I was playing with Will Todisco and he suggested "Gungan Lover" so I made up "True Love," basically the way it is now (I did edit it some after). Thanks to Conor Shanahan for recording that improvised version.
I had been listening to a lot of Je Suis France, particularly their song "Working Overtime to Kill You" at the time, so the first three chords are from that. I was sobbing every time I played it for a while. I don't personally like any of the things this couple does (except laying in bed), but they are very much in love.
Thomas Colgrove wrote and recorded incredible cello parts that make me melt every time I hear it.
Then I asked Greta Kline (Frankie Cosmos), Dan Wriggins (from Friendship), and Bill Taft (from Smoke, Hubcap City, W8ing4UFOs, Chowder Shouters, Jody Grind, and Smoke that City) to sing backup vocals. They all came through perfectly. I love their bands so much and this is a big honor to have them on my song.
lyrics
(Electric guitar, palm muted power chords)
C-g-c-g
I went to a cosplay con
to show off my homemade suit
when I saw there was another Gon-Gon
I fell right in love with you
f-c-f-c-f-c-em-c
and we laid in bed
and we watched star trek
and read about star wars
and we played battletech
and I held you
in your outfit
and I love you
in or out of it
c-g-c-g
we cosplayed at conventions
til we were seventy five years old
I hate that I have to mention
this year one less pass was sold
f-c-f-c-f-c-em-c
and your costume
misses you
I do too
but i'll join you
(so they tell me)
in a story
that sounds like Anne McCaffrey:
c-g
a city in the air
with a giant pearly gate
I hope I make it up there
so we can have another cosplay date
f-c-f-c-f-c-em-c
and we'll lay in bed and we'll watch star trek
and read about star wars
and we'll play battletech of course
f-c-f-c-f-c-em-c
and we'll lay in bed and we'll watch star trek
and read about star wars
and we'll play battletech
(F power chord up an octave – C power chord up an octave)
and no one will judge us x3
